It was a simple Friday, early evening. March 1st, a rather chilly yet sunny day here in New York City when it happened. Around 6PM Eastern Standard Time. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s official, verified TikTok account dropped a 38 second video, and the world was changed forever.

Apparently the 75 year old composer who gave us such hits as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, Starlight Express, The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, School of Rock, and even Bad Cinderella has never… tried peanut butter.

March 1 is National Peanut Butter Lovers Day, so the incredible social media intern running Sir Andrew’s account over in the UK blessed us with this wonderful clip that I think needs a full dissection, starting now:

We start with Andrew, in some classic denim jeans and a light blue shirt presumably at his dining room table(?! - there is a piano right behind him) with a pink plate in front of him. One slice of bread, sliced down the middle. He starts by stating the colour (British) isn’t very nice, and that its a bit “sludgey” to him. On half of the bread is smooth peanut butter, while the other half has crunchy. I admire his scientific testing to have both varieties, but what kind of bread are we working with here? Is it toasted? I still have many questions… but let’s get to the first bite.

After 27,738 days on this earch. Webber takes his first taste. He waits 3 or 4 seconds before making a foul face. “Oh, it’s horrible. Absolutely disgusting,” he remarks before taking a bite of the crunchy side. I do say, I love the multi-camera angle work. Following his cruchy bite, he remarks that he doesn’t even swallow it. He questions who invited this before stating that peanuts might be quite nice on their own. Blackout. As of this posting, the video has garnered over 330k views and hundreds of comments that are chock-full of comedy gold.

It has been reported over the years that the brown sticky treat is much more popular over here in the States than with our British counterparts, and while its popularity has certainly grown over the years over in the UK, it still has yet to fully stick. Now I need a full series of Broadway composers trying new dishes. Perhaps Jason Robert Brown eating crawfish or Shaina Taub having baulga caviar for the first time. All that to say, thank you Andrew for this riveting moment of social media. And while he may not want to spread any more peanut butter on his toast, he can certainly prepare to spread some joy with New York audiences once Sunset Blvd hits the Great White Way later this fall.
